The Advantages of Online University Programs

Online University Programs Widely Available

Thousands of universities and four-year colleges across Canada and the United States offer distance learning opportunities. In the past two decades, these course and program options have evolved from traditional paper correspondence to online learning modules, or a combination of both.

The National Center for Education Statistics reported an estimated 12.2 enrollments in distance education courses for the 2006-07 school year. Of those registrants, 77% signed on to complete their courses online.

Online university programs offer students flexibility, a self-learning environment with online supports, convenience, and quite often, cost savings.

Accredited Programs with Distance Education Universities Offer Several Benefits

Unemployment in Canada hit a 7-year high at 8% in May 2009 (Stats Canada).  Americans didn't fare much better in May, with an unemployment rate 3.9% higher than in the same period in 2008 (U.S. Dept. of Labor).

For many, an educational upgrade is an excellent choice, whether they decide to pursue an undergraduate degree, finish grad school, apprentice into a skilled trade, or attend a career college.  Adult students who own homes may be able to use the equity in their property to fund their continued education.  Others might choose to use government, bank or private loans, as well as bursaries, grants and scholarships.

The advantages of pursuing degree programs online through online universities are numerous:

  • Students do not have to relocate to attend school.
  • Online degree programs can be structured around the student's current work schedule.
  • Students and their families can save money by sharing living expenses.
  • There is no time wasted on commuting to and from classes.
  • Each student can learn at their own pace.
  • Online university programs are continually updated, giving access to the most current and relevant information.
  • Accessibility improves for parents, students in rural areas, and those with physical disabilities or limitations.
  • Students can study in a comfortable environment, wherever there is an internet connection.

Making the Decision to Continue Education with Degree Programs Online

It may seem nonsensical to spend money on tuition if times are already tight.  However, education is an investment that pays off with a higher wage and greater opportunities upon graduation.

If credit is an obstacle in securing funding for tuition to enroll in an online degree program, read Best Debt Consolidation Companies to learn how you may be able to correct the issue and still qualify for loans.

Many people hope to return to school, but aren't sure which program is right for them.  Use a tool such as FunEducation.com's free Career and Personality Assessment to evaluate your options and current skills.

Finally, contact three or four online universities with accredited programs and ask for educational counseling or consultation by phone.

Great hub. Online study is so handy if you still need to work & gives you an option when maybe otherwise you would just have to miss out.

Thanks, Aquasea! I'm taking my university degree online and it wouldn't be possible if I had to move to a city center.

Have you found it hard to keep focused when you're taking classes online, as opposed to attending classes in person?

Actually, it's easier for me to learn at my own pace. I'm hoping to get my entire university degree online, without setting foot in a classroom. I can take my time where I need to and not wait on the rest... it's great.

I think I would have a tough time taking internet courses due to a lack of discipline (I believe I would learn better in a traditional classroom setting even though I have no problem with working from home). It is wonderful that by using the reach of the internet, colleges and universities are starting to see this valuable teaching tool and more people have access to higher education. Great article. Gives me something to think about.

I am actually looking into the online university program that Boston University offers and think this is a great tool for those of us who are well beyond our fraternity/sorority days and are interested in only the educational aspects.
